Escalator Over the Hill

Escalator Over the Hill is a large-scale, long-form work composed and organized by Carla Bley with a libretto by Paul Haines, released in 1971. The project blends avant-garde jazz, experimental big band writing, and third stream approaches with elements of rock, gospel, and world music, using orchestral arrangements, improvisation, theatrical vocals, and varied instrumentation to create a sprawling, genre-crossing soundscape.
