Carla Bley

Carla Bley was an American composer, pianist, and bandleader known for an inventive and often humorous approach to jazz composition and arrangement. Emerging from the 1960s avant-garde scene, she led both large ensembles and small groups and created ambitious projects that blended jazz improvisation with orchestral and theatrical elements, including the jazz opera Escalator Over the Hill. Her work is frequently noted for lyrical melodies, unexpected harmonies, and a wry sense of wit.
