U‐Roy

U-Roy (Ewart Beckford) was a Jamaican deejay known for popularizing toasting, a rhythmic spoken and melodic vocal delivery over reggae and dub instrumental versions. His improvisational, patter-driven approach brought the deejay voice to the foreground in Jamaican sound system culture and helped shape later dancehall vocal styles while influencing DJ practices beyond reggae.
