The Roots

The Roots are an American hip hop band formed in 1987 in Philadelphia, led by rapper Black Thought and drummer/producer Questlove. They are known for using live instrumentation within hip hop, blending jazz, soul, and funk influences with lyrical, often socially conscious rap, and for a sound that emphasizes groove, improvisation, and musicianship. The group has been notable for its live performances and for serving as a house band on national late-night television.
