The Modern Jazz Quartet
The Modern Jazz Quartet was an American jazz ensemble formed in 1952 that performed through 1993. The group blended bebop roots with a chamber jazz approach, favoring formal arrangements, subtle dynamics, and elements drawn from classical forms such as counterpoint and fugue. Its sound centered on the interplay between John Lewis's piano and Milt Jackson's vibraphone, supported by bass and drums, and it was known for a refined, restrained aesthetic that bridged small-group improvisation and composed textures. Early drummer Kenny Clarke was later replaced by Connie Kay, with Percy Heath as the long-serving bassist.
