The Meters

The Meters are an American band from New Orleans, formed in 1965, known as early exponents of New Orleans funk. Their sound emphasizes tight, syncopated grooves created by interlocking drum, bass, guitar, and keyboard parts, often with an instrumental focus and touches of R&B and Caribbean rhythmic influence. The original core lineup included Art Neville, George Porter Jr., Leo Nocentelli, and Zigaboo Modeliste, and the group also worked frequently as session and backing musicians. Their rhythmic approach and groove-oriented playing have been cited as influential across later funk, R&B, and hip hop artists.
