Sons of Kemet

Sons of Kemet was a British jazz ensemble formed in 2011 and led by saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings. The band used an unusual lineup led by reeds and tuba with a two-drummer/percussion rhythm section, blending jazz improvisation with Caribbean, African and Afrobeat-derived rhythms, emphatic polyrhythms and occasional spoken-word or politically engaged themes. Active across the 2010s and early 2020s, they were a notable presence in the contemporary London jazz scene before disbanding in 2022.
