Mamie Smith

Mamie Smith was an American vaudeville singer, dancer, and actress whose performances blended theatrical stage delivery with blues inflections and popular dance music of the early 20th century. She is known as one of the first African American singers to record blues vocals commercially; her 1920 recording often cited as an early landmark helped open recording opportunities for Black artists and bridged vaudeville and emerging blues styles.
