James Carr

James Carr (died 2001) was an American soul singer known for a deep, emotive Southern soul style and plaintive, gospel-tinged vocal delivery. His late 1960s recordings for independent Southern labels captured a raw, intimate sound with expressive phrasing, and his career included periods of strong creative output as well as long gaps related to personal and health challenges.
