Von Freeman was an American tenor saxophonist closely associated with the Chicago jazz scene, known for a distinctive, flexible tone and an improvisational approach that bridged swing-era phrasing and modern jazz harmonies; he was a longtime presence on the Chicago club circuit and served as a mentor and influential figure for younger local musicians, and he died in 2012.
