Víctor Jara

Víctor Jara (Chile, died 1973) was a singer-songwriter, theater director, and teacher associated with the Nueva Canción movement. His work relied on folk guitar and clear, direct vocal delivery to convey narrative songs that addressed social and political themes, and he was active in left-leaning cultural circles. Jara was arrested and killed in the aftermath of the 1973 Chilean coup, and his life and death are closely linked to discussions of protest, memory, and human rights in Chile.
