Ray Barretto

Ray Barretto was an American conga player and bandleader of Puerto Rican descent, active primarily in New York. He was a prominent figure in Latin jazz and salsa, known for bringing Afro-Cuban percussion into jazz contexts and for leading ensembles that balanced dance-oriented salsa with improvisational Latin jazz approaches. He worked across jazz and Latin scenes and died in 2006.
