Pierre Boulez

Pierre Boulez (France, 1925–2016) was a composer and conductor associated with postwar European modernism, known for rigorous serial and structural approaches to composition, precise textures, and an interest in electronic and spatialized sound. He founded the Ensemble InterContemporain and was instrumental in establishing the Paris research center IRCAM, and he was active as a conductor whose technique emphasized clarity and exacting rehearsal standards while promoting contemporary repertoire. His compositions, including works such as Le Marteau sans maître and Structures, are often characterized by intricate rhythmic detail and careful attention to timbre and form.
