Miles Davis Quintet

Miles Davis Quintet (active 1955–1968) refers to two key lineups led by trumpeter Miles Davis, often called the First and Second Great Quintets. Rooted in jazz, the ensemble moved from hard bop into modal and post-bop territory, emphasizing sparse, lyrical trumpet lines, modal harmony, rhythmic flexibility, and interactive group improvisation. The earlier lineup worked within blues-based and bebop-derived forms, while the later lineup explored freer harmonic and time concepts with a more elastic rhythm section. Their sound is marked by close interplay between soloists, an economy of notes, and attention to space and dynamics.
