Gerry Mulligan

Gerry Mulligan was an American jazz baritone saxophonist, composer, arranger, and bandleader associated with the cool jazz movement. He was known for a light, melodic baritone tone, lyrical improvisation, and inventive arrangements that emphasized counterpoint and close interplay, including a notable piano-less quartet format that foregrounded horn interaction. Across several decades he led ensembles, wrote arrangements and compositions, and collaborated widely in jazz performance. He died in 1996.
