Cecil Taylor

Cecil Taylor was an American pianist and composer known for a highly percussive, complex approach to the piano that helped shape free and avant-garde jazz. His playing featured rapid clusters, dense atonal textures, shifting meters, and extended techniques, and he combined rigorous structural ideas with intense spontaneous improvisation. Taylor also incorporated spoken word and influences from modern classical music into his ensembles, making him a distinctive figure in experimental jazz in the second half of the 20th century.
