They are known for fast, riff-driven songs that combine elements of heavy metal and hardcore punk, and are often mentioned alongside Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer as key figures in the thrash scene. Their sound features chugging guitar riffs, rapid drumming, and a mix of shouted and melodic vocals, and the group has incorporated crossover influences from funk and hip-hop at times. Longstanding members include guitarist Scott Ian, drummer Charlie Benante, and bassist Frank Bello, with vocal duties historically shared by Joey Belladonna and John Bush.
