Savage Mode

Savage Mode is a 2016 collaborative EP by 21 Savage and producer Metro Boomin that exemplifies dark, minimalist trap rooted in Southern hip hop. Metro Boomin’s ominous, cinematic beats use sparse, reverb-heavy synths, deep bass and stark percussion to create a cold backdrop for 21 Savage’s deadpan, laconic delivery and street-focused lyrics. The project’s mood-driven production and restrained vocal approach became a defining example of a stripped-down trap aesthetic and raised the profile of both artists.
